This set design imagines Shakespeare’s The Tempest performed on an offshore oil rig. I focused on the feeling of an isolated island by placing the story above the sea.
The ocean was made with resin to create a clear, water-like surface. The oil rig’s design uses strong square shapes to show the efficient and rough feeling of industrial spaces. Metal parts in the model also help create this atmosphere.
The audience seating is placed behind glass on the second floor. Actor movement happens on the rooftop (third floor) so it stays hidden from the audience.
Because the stage space is very large, I used many different levels to create more dynamic movement.
